Clairo, an American singer-songwriter, has made a significant impact in the music industry since she began recording covers on her MacBook at the age of 13. Her initial foray into music involved covering a Maroon 5 song, which she hesitantly posted on Facebook after hours of deliberation, as recounted in a 2015 interview with Rookie. This tentative step marked the beginning of her journey, which saw her performing covers at local businesses like Blue Dry Goods and gaining the attention of MTV, although a song she recorded for them was never used.
While attending Concord-Carlisle High School, Clairo began sharing her music on Bandcamp under the names Clairo and DJ Baby Benz. She expanded her presence by posting covers, original songs, and DJ mixes of rap music on SoundCloud, and even ventured into filmmaking, posting three short films on an old YouTube channel and maintaining a second one for additional covers and films.
In 2013, she released her EP Do U Wanna Fall in Love?, followed by several more EPs in 2015, including Aquarius Boy, Late Show, Moth Girl, Metal Heart, and Have a Nice Day. These early works showcased her evolving style and growing confidence as an artist.
Clairo’s debut studio album, Immunity, released in 2019, marked a significant milestone in her career. Featuring singles like "Bags" and "Sofia," the latter of which charted on the Billboard Hot 100, the album was praised for its introspective lyrics, sophisticated production, and Clairo’s distinctive vocal delivery. Immunity established her as a vital new voice in contemporary music.
Her artistic evolution continued with her second studio album, Sling, in 2021, produced in collaboration with Jack Antonoff. This album, noted for its mature sound and introspective themes, debuted in the top 20 of the US Billboard 200, reaffirming Clairo’s critical and commercial success. Clairo’s work, characterized by its emotional depth and authenticity, resonates widely, underscoring her prominent status in the modern music landscape.
