Frontman Tyler Joseph wrote the album, with production handled alongside frequent collaborator Paul Meany. Speculation about the album culminated in its announcement on February 29, 2024. Leading up to the release, four singles were dropped: "Overcompensate" on the announcement day, "Next Semester" on March 27, "Backslide" on April 25, and "The Craving" on May 22. The fourth single's release included a "Single Version" differing in instrumentation from the on-album "Jenna's Version."

A narrated video, released on the band's social media on February 22, featured Clancy summarizing the story of the past three albums and his escape attempts from Dema, concluding with his return to Trench. This narrative setup paved the way for the album's announcement and the release of "Overcompensate" as the lead single.

On March 18, Joseph revealed that every track on the album would have an accompanying music video, all slated for release with the album.
