Hariharan (born April 3, 1955) was born in Trivandrum, Travancore-Cochin, India. He is a renowned Indian playback singer, known for his soulful renditions in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu languages. He is a versatile singer, having sung over 15,000 songs in 10 different regional languages, including Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Sinhala and Bhojpuri.

Hariharan started his career doing the concert circuit and performing on TV. He lent his voice to several TV serials, including the popular show, Junoon. In 1977, he participated in the "All India Sur Singaar Competition" and won the top prize. This win led him to being signed by the legendary music director Jaidev to sing for his upcoming Hindi film, Gaman (1978). Hariharan's debut song in the movie, "Ajeeb Sa neha Mujh Par Guzar gaya yaaron," became an instant hit and won him an Uttar Pradesh State Film Award, along with a National Award nomination.

Over the years, Hariharan has established himself as a leading ghazal singer and is regarded as one of the pioneers of Indian fusion music. In 2004, he was bestowed with the prestigious Padma Shri award by the Government of India, and he is also a two-time National Award winner. Hariharan has collaborated with Lesle Lewis to form Colonial Cousins, a two-member band that has cut numerous private music albums and has also composed music for a few feature films in Tamil and Hindi.

Hariharan's musical legacy has been further cemented by his recent achievement. On October 9, 2021, at 13:47, the rendition of Hanuman Chalisa, sung by Hariharan and the late Gulshan Kumar under the label of T-Series, crossed the 2-billion views mark on YouTube. This makes it the first devotional song in the world to achieve this feat, cementing Hariharan's status as a musical icon.
