164 American Musician

John Anthony White (born July 9, 1975) was born in Detroit, Michigan, United States. He is an accomplished American musician, singer, songwriter, and music producer. He is professionally known as Jack White/John Gillis. He is most famed as the frontman and guitarist of the renowned duo, The White Stripes. White's significant role in the garage rock revival during the 2000s has earned him both critical acclaim and widespread popularity. With an impressive collection of 12 Grammy Awards, he has also secured three solo albums at the pinnacle of the Billboard charts.

Notably, Rolling Stone's 2010 list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" positioned him at an esteemed 70, while David Fricke's list ranked him at 17. The New York Times hailed him in 2012 as "the coolest, weirdest and savviest rockstar of our time."

Emerging from Detroit's underground music scene, White's journey began as a drummer in various local bands. In 1997, he co-founded The White Stripes with his then-wife Meg White, a fellow Detroit native. The duo's breakthrough arrived with the 2001 album "White Blood Cells," gaining international prominence via the hit single "Fell in Love with a Girl" and its innovative music video. This success opened doors for collaborations with music icons like Loretta Lynn and Bob Dylan.

Expanding his musical horizons, White established The Raconteurs alongside Brendan Benson in 2005, and in 2009, he co-founded The Dead Weather with Alison Mosshart. A striking milestone came in 2008 when he partnered with Alicia Keys for "Another Way to Die," the title track of the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace," making them the sole duet in the Bond song legacy. White's solo journey, marked by four studio albums, has been marked by both critical acclamation and commercial triumph.

Beyond his musical prowess, White is an active board member of the National Recording Preservation Foundation at the Library of Congress. He also operates his label and studio, Third Man Records, which features his works as well as those of fellow artists and even young local talents. His second studio album, "Lazaretto," holds a distinctive record for the highest first-week vinyl sales since 1991.

Renowned for his penchant for vintage instruments, particularly those linked to legendary blues artists, White passionately advocates for analog technology and recording techniques. While valuing his privacy, he has sometimes employed misdirection about his personal life. Initially married to Meg White in 1996, they divorced in 2000 and later claimed to be siblings, a ruse that persisted during the band's peak fame. His marriage to model and singer Karen Elson lasted from 2005 to 2013, resulting in a son and daughter. In 2022, White entered matrimony with musician Olivia Jean. He currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee, where his multi-faceted musical legacy continues to thrive.
