Queen Lyrics - Discography

482 British Rock Band

Queen is a legendary British rock band that was formed in London in 1970 by the iconic Freddie Mercury on lead vocals and piano, Brian May on guitar and vocals, and Roger Taylor on drums and vocals. The band was later joined by John Deacon on bass.

Before forming Queen, May and Taylor had already played together in the band Smile, and Mercury, who was a big fan of their music, encouraged them to experiment with more elaborate stage and recording techniques.

After joining forces, Queen began their journey by drawing influences from progressive rock, hard rock, and heavy metal. However, they later evolved and ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly music styles by incorporating further genres such as arena rock and pop rock.

Queen's debut album was released in 1973, a year after Deacon's recruitment into the band. However, it was their second album, Queen II, released in 1974 that brought the band to the attention of the British audience. They soon gained international success with their album Sheer Heart Attack, released later that year, and their 1975 album A Night at the Opera, which featured the iconic "Bohemian Rhapsody". The song stayed at the top of the UK charts for nine weeks and helped to popularise the music video format.

For over five decades, Queen has remained a global presence in popular culture, having sold an estimated 250 million to 300 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. In 1990, the band received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. Queen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and all four members were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003, with each member having composed hit singles. In 2005, they received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors, and in 2018, they were presented with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Queen's music continues to inspire and influence generations of music lovers around the world, and their legacy lives on.
