The band comprises six members, including lead vocalist Adam Levine, rhythm guitarist and keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, lead guitarist James Valentine, drummer Matt Flynn, keyboardist PJ Morton, and multi-instrumentalist and bassist Sam Farrar.

The group first formed in 1994 while the original members, including Levine, Carmichael, bassist Mickey Madden, and drummer Ryan Dusick, were still in high school, under the name Kara's Flowers.

After experiencing some initial success, the band took a hiatus before reuniting and rebranding as Maroon 5. Over the years, the band has released several chart-topping albums, including their fifth album, V, which was released in 2014. This album, recorded with Interscope Records and Levine's label 222 Records, topped the Billboard 200 charts.

In 2016, Maroon 5 brought back Carmichael, and the band continued to work on their sixth studio album, Red Pill Blues, which featured several successful singles such as "Sugar" and "Girls Like You," both of which peaked high on the Hot 100 chart. With the addition of Morton and Farrar, the band's lineup expanded to seven members, bringing an even richer and more diverse sound to their music.

In June 2021, Maroon 5 released their seventh album, Jordi, which featured collaborations with several renowned artists, including Megan Thee Stallion, Stevie Nicks, and Juice WRLD. With over 135 million records sold, the band has become one of the world's best-selling music artists, earning them numerous accolades and awards, including three Grammy Awards out of ten nominations, eight awards out of forty nominations at the Billboard Music Awards, three American Music Awards, three People's Choice Awards, and an award at the MTV Video Music Awards. The band has also been nominated four times at the BRIT Awards.
