Lee Jin-ki (born February 12, 1991) was born in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. He is a multifaceted South Korean artist who has made his mark in the music industry, as well as in musicals and television dramas. He is professionally known as Onew. Onew was discovered at the 2006 SM Academy Casting and soon after signed with SM Entertainment.
He debuted as the lead vocalist and leader of the popular boy group Shinee in May 2008, quickly becoming one of the most beloved artists in South Korea. As a member of Shinee, Onew's unique and understated voice served as a vital component of the group's success. He has contributed to the original soundtracks for various TV series and collaborated with numerous artists throughout his career.
In December 2018, Onew made his solo debut with the release of his first extended play, "Voice," which peaked at number two on South Korea's Gaon Album Chart. In April 2022, he released his second EP, "Dice," which debuted at number three on the same chart. Onew's first studio album, "Life Goes On," was released in Japan on July 6, 2022, marking his solo debut in the country.
In addition to his musical pursuits, Onew has also made a name for himself as an actor. He has appeared in multiple musicals, including "Rock of Ages" in 2010 and "Shinheung Military Academy" in 2019, and most recently starred in "Midnight Sun" from 2021-2022. He has also made appearances in various television dramas, most notably as Baek Su in JTBC's sitcom "Welcome to Royal Villa" and as cardiothoracic resident Lee Chi-hoon in the popular KBS2 drama "Descendants of the Sun" in 2016.
Throughout his career, Onew has also contributed to songwriting, both for himself and for Shinee. He is known for his distinctively unique vocal color and has gained a large following of fans who appreciate his calm and understated voice.
