149 English Rock Band

Pink Floyd, an iconic English rock band, was formed in London in 1965. The group quickly gained a following as one of the first British psychedelic bands, characterized by their lengthy compositions, experimental use of sound, thought-provoking lyrics, and elaborate stage productions. As pioneers of the progressive rock genre, some consider them to be the greatest progressive rock band of all time.

The original lineup included Syd Barrett on guitar and lead vocals, Nick Mason on drums, Roger Waters on bass guitar and vocals, and Richard Wright on keyboards and vocals. Under Barrett's leadership, they released two successful singles and their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967). Later that year, David Gilmour joined the band, and after Barrett's departure in 1968 due to mental health issues, Gilmour became a pivotal member of the group.

As Waters became the primary songwriter and conceptual leader, he created the thematic concepts behind Pink Floyd's most successful albums, including The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979). The latter was adapted into a musical film, Pink Floyd – The Wall (1982), which won two BAFTA Awards. The band also composed several film scores throughout their career.

Pink Floyd's music has resonated with fans worldwide, with over 250 million records sold. Their albums, including The Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, and Wish You Were Here, have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and are among the best-selling albums of all time. The band has also achieved significant chart success, with four albums reaching the top of the US Billboard 200 and five reaching the top of the UK Albums Chart. The band's hit singles include "See Emily Play" (1967), "Money" (1973), "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2" (1979), "Not Now John" (1983), "On the Turning Away" (1987) and "High Hopes" (1994).

In recognition of their groundbreaking influence on modern music, Pink Floyd was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. The band also received the prestigious Polar Music Prize in Sweden in 2008. Pink Floyd's impact on rock music is undeniable, and their legacy continues to inspire and captivate audiences to this day.
